Frequently Asked Questions.

What can I expect in a lactation consultation and what is included?

Your lactation consultant will ask questions in order to get a thorough medical history of both you and your baby.

Next your lactation consultant will gently examine both you and your baby and invite you to feed your baby so they can best assess how things are going.

If your visit is in person, your lactation consultant will weight your infant on a sensitive scale before and after feeding to find out how much milk your baby took during the feeding.

After a complete assessment, your lactation consultant will discuss with you their thoughts on how to improve your feeding and write up a care plan with you.

You are encouraged to share your thoughts and feelings at anytime before, during, and after the appointment in order for you to feel the most comfortable and to have a plan that best fits you, your baby, and your family.

A full report will be sent to your other health professionals by request and you will be given referrals to other providers if necessary. Your lactation consultant will follow up and you are encouraged to keep in touch until you feel that any feeding issues you’ve had are resolved.

Email and phone support is included in your care after an initial consult, however follow up appointments to assess milk transfer or weight gain may be needed.

When should I schedule a consultation?

Ideally, the first few days after birth. Providing human milk is a personal experience that often needs a little help to get going. A lactation consultant can be the calm, supportive expert that your family may need to have success. Our lactation consultants are Internationally Board Certified (IBCLC). An IBCLC is a professional trained in lactation care. We can help with many aspects of infant feeding. Feel free to reach out for whatever questions or concerns you may have.

Do you support bottle feeding clients?

Yes! We support all infant feeding concerns. We help parents navigate combination feeding as well as exclusively pumping and formula feeding parents.

Will you support my decision not to breastfeed?

Absolutely. This is a personal decision and as lactation consultants, our job is to help you meet your feeding goals. There are many reasons and circumstances that might lead someone to decide not to breastfeed. We are here to support you with any feeding goals you have.
